The Golden Onion of Banari is the symbolic product of the village and one of the best-known gastronomic excellences of the Meilogu region. It is a native cultivar, grown for generations in the fields surrounding the town and distinguished by unique characteristics in terms of shape, color, and flavor thanks to the area’s environmental conditions.
Its appearance is immediately recognizable: the bulbs are large, flattened, and slightly concave at the top. Their weight can range from 400 grams to over 1.5 kilograms. The outer skins display the distinctive golden color from which it takes its name, while the inside is light, tending toward ivory. What makes it especially appreciated is its sweet and delicate flavor, which lends itself perfectly to many traditional local recipes as well as contemporary cuisine.
For many years, the Golden Onion of Banari represented an important resource for the local agricultural economy. It was cultivated in large quantities and sold across markets throughout northern Sardinia. Starting in the 1950s, however, production gradually declined, partly due to the abandonment of rural areas and the lack of generational turnover among producers. Cultivation survived mainly within family settings, slowly risking disappearance.
Since 2003, thanks to the creation of the Golden Onion Festival of Banari and the enhancement initiatives promoted by the local community, this agricultural tradition has regained new attention. Today, the onion is known throughout Sardinia and is often mentioned among Italy’s most appreciated varieties for both quality and flavor.
Even today, the production process maintains a strong connection to the rhythms of traditional rural life. The seeds, passed down from generation to generation, are prepared at the end of summer and cultivated without the use of chemical fertilizers. After the seedbed stage, the young plants are transplanted into the fields and carefully tended for months until the summer harvest, which is still carried out entirely by hand.
The Golden Onion Festival of Banari was created precisely to celebrate and promote this agricultural and cultural heritage. During the event, the village hosts tastings, food workshops, showcooking sessions, music performances, excursions, exhibitions, and spaces dedicated to local art and traditions. In this way, the onion becomes a meeting point between gastronomy, culture, and local identity.
For 2026, the festival will take place on July 18 and 19. All information about the upcoming edition is available on the official website: www.sagracipollabanari.it
